Duets With Doug: The Ultimate Jazz Fake Book Series. CD Version. Duets With Doug: The Ultimate Jazz Fake Book Series. CD Version. I have created a new duet series with chromatic players in mind. I have been asked at harmonica seminars and festivals to create a series of CDs/tapes of rhythm guitar accompaniment for standards, pop tunes and jazz tunes. I asked chromatic players for advice on developing the series and making song suggestions. As a result of their input, John Watts and I searched for a book that would contain a majority of the requested tunes. John contacted and received permission from Hal Leonard Publications to use The Ultimate Jazz Fake Book as the source for the series. The series will give you an opportunity to: 1. Play duets with Doug as your rhythm guitarist. 2. Sight read melodies. 3. Improvise choruses 'I appreciate your help and vote of confidence on this project.' Doug Puls I'll be your personal rhythm guitarist accompanying you on the above tunes selected from Hal Leonard Publications' The Ultimate Jazz Fake Book, C Edition. I'll back you up on guitar so you can play the melody and improvise. I will provide page number, song title, song key and starting melody note and count you in for each tune. 1. This is SO GREAT! |

First a disclaimer: I know Doug and consider him a friend. We have no business dealings and I only see him in person once a year, if that, at a Harmonica Fest in Richmond VA. Because I know Doug, I was only going to give this four stars so you wouldn't think it's just his friend talking, but because it's only $11.95, it's such a bargain that I HAD to give it all five! Unless you're good at squeezing all the notes out of a diatonic harmonica, this CD is one for the Chromatic players. Not only is it great to play along with these timeless standards (and believe me, your playing WILL improve each time you play along) there's an added benefit that even Doug probably didn't think of: By listening to the CD without playing along, you learn what chord structure *sounds like.* You learn to 'think' in terms of what chord fits where. The sounds of the chords suggest a bass line too, so if you're a BASS harmonica player (or a CHORD harmonica player) it's a great teaching tool for you as well. The CD *does* attract bad drivers, so be careful. The first time I was listening to it, I got plowed into from behind and was taken to the hospital for xrays, but I grabbed my preview copy from the player before the EMTs dragged my ample kiester onto a backboard. X-rays showed that I was fine, and I believe I heard the doctor say, "It's a good thing he was listening to Doug Puls' CD, or he'd be in really bad shape." At least that's what I *think* she said.
