Like the harmonica, the sax is a very expressive instrument - more than any other instrument, it is able to produce the notes in between the notes - the sharp sharps and the flat flats. The Bushman Pocket Sax sounds like a sax, looks like a clarinet and is played like a recorder. This fabulous little instrument is only 12-1/2 long, but it produces an amazing, big sax sound. It is a true portable instrument that can be carried everywhere - in your pocket, backpack, even up your sleeve! The Pocket Sax is about two octaves lower than conventional flutes of the same length. Play it in an acoustic space and it will sound like a full-sized saxophone! The Pocket Sax uses a tenor sax reed and has a brass ligature and a brass ring at the bell end for a nice accent. It is made from the same type of plastic used in the construction of woodwind mouthpieces and instruments like the clarinet. It is tuned in the popular key of C and has a range of 2 full chromatic octaves! You must either be a woodwind player, or be willing to go through the process of the learning to play a woodwind in order to play the Pocket Sax. It requires lots more air than a harmonica, and skillful embouchure control; however, once mastered the Bushman Pocket Sax makes beautiful music, and its uniqueness will jump start many conversations. It comes set up with a #2 1/2 strength reed, ready to play. Replacement reeds and other strength reeds are sold at the right of this page. It's a good idea to have some spare reeds on hand because sax reeds will wear out eventually. The Pocket Sax comes complete with a mouthpiece protector and 20 page full color instruction manual which includes a fingering chart. The Pocket Sax will usually play 2 octaves lower than a recorder, making duets originally written for two recorders sound especially nice when played with one recorder and one Pocket Sax. The fingering for the Pocket Sax is similar to that of a recorder. When playing a C scale the fingering is pretty much the same until you get to the B and Bb, which are different. The concept of an octave hole is gone too; instead the thumb hole in the rear is just another hole to help play a continuous scale.

For those who are into both harmonicas and Celtic style whistles, this little instrument is perfect for that unique SAX sound. Granted, it DOES take some practice, but it's the same process in learning the embouchure for a crosswind flute. Once your mouth understands the subtle differences, it's easy. If you love the harmonica, like I do, and you also play Celtic flutes and whistles like I do, this instrument is the next evolution in that development. You'll squeak and squawk for awhile, but when you finally lock into the notes, (and it REALLY DOES lock into the C-Major scale) you'll be glad you became a pocket sax player. |

I have been a sax and clarinet player for over 15 years and this is a great way to prepare for any of them sax embochure and clarinet digitation. Lots of fun for easy playing. Good ear training tool. Also great to travel with. |

I got this in the mail the other day and took it out of the box. It really is a gorgeous little item. I've been playing harmonica for over 20 years, and was a bit concerned because I've never played a reed instrument. But after only a few minutes I was able to get sound out of it and only about an hour to get a scale. The sound on this baby is GORGEOUS--like a tenor sax. SUPERB buy! |
